The need for a root canal develops when an infection gets into the pulp tissue. These infections can be caused by any number of situations. In a root canal procedure, the dentist
will open up the tooth through the crown (or top). This simple act relieves pressure and often this can bring a great deal of pain relief to the patient. The pulp, or nerve tissue, is then removed and the
resulting canal space is filled with a bio-compatible material, (most often gutta-percha) to keep bacteria from re-forming in the canal.
